Unless you’ve been living under a rock, by now you’ve definitely heard about the Emirates Mars Mission – UAE’s planned space exploration mission to Mars in an orbiter called ‘Hope’. First announced in July 2014 by H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE’s Mission to Mars is finally ready to launch. As of 16 July, 2020 we’re awaiting a new launch date to be confirmed in the next 24 hours due to bad weather in Japan. The Mission staff is currently monitoring the weather conditions over Japan, and will schedule a launch date and time shortly.
Reach for the Stars is a new documentary or docu-series by National Geographic digging deep into UAE’s historic journey into space. This Nat Geo special follows Hazza Al Mansouri and Sultan Al Neyadi as they prepare their minds and body for that monumental trip to outer space.
Now that the UAE’s astronauts are ready for take-off, it’s safe to say that all of us who live here in the United Arab Emirates are eagerly waiting on the launch date and will be watching it live! But we won’t be the only ones - the world will be watching UAE’s meteoric rise into space.
The entire series captures every emotion and essence of why this space mission was established, and how the team got to where they are today. The series also features multiple interviews with the astronauts themselves – regarding their dreams, aspirations, their goals, and most importantly their journey leading up to the launch of UAE’s Mars Mission. The series will also explore the feasibility of sustaining life on the red planet, based on data collected from the orbiters trip. Over 150 Emirati engineers, scientists and researchers have spent 6 years putting this mission together, in time for 2020. And the time is now, this is the moment.
The Emirates Mars Mission is a significant step towards space exploration for UAE. The Hope obiter will provide us with a complete picture of the Martian atmosphere and its layers. The probe itself will only reach Mars in 2021, and will help answer important questions about the planet itself. The objectives of the Emirates Mars Mission and the UAE Space Agency have been documented and clear from the beginning:
- To understand the climate on the red planet, along with the weather map and atmospheric dynamics.
- Explain what changes take place with the escape of Hydrogen and Oxygen in the lower and upper atmosphere.
- Understanding the structure of the atmosphere in general, and identifying why Mars is losing them into space.

The Mission duration is set for approximately 1 Martian year (about 2 Earth years), and the Hope probe will travel 493.5 million kilometers in that time.
